At the LEAF Lab, we conduct experiments to try to understand babies’ and children’s changing abilities.
We conduct a few different kinds of studies, depending on the age and behaviors we are trying to understand. Studies typically last 15-45 minutes. Families receive a Junior Scientist certificate for their child and a token of appreciation (toy or $5 gift card).
Studies for babies. You might be asked to hold your baby on your lap while we display sounds and videos on the screen to them. We measure their interest (how long does something hold their attention?) and sometimes their emotions (did they smile? did they frown?). These studies last about 10 minutes.
Studies for children. For preschool or older children, we ask them to play games or answer questions in a game-ified setting. Their responses to our questions (the response they click, what they say, or how they react) helps us understand what they know and perceive. These studies last about 20-30 minutes.
Studies from the home. We are also interested in babies’ and children’s behaviors where they’re most comfortable – at home! In this kind of study, we might send you a playlist of music or sounds and ask you to send us a video of your child’s spontaneous reactions. These studies last about 10 minutes.
